Susan Harwood Training
Grants Program
Background Information
OSHA awards grants on a competitive basis through its
Susan Harwood Training Grant Program. Grants are awarded to nonprofit
organizations to provide training and education programs or to develop training
materials for employers and workers on the recognition, avoidance, and
prevention of safety and health hazards in their workplaces. OSHA selects the
safety and health topics and holds a national competition to award grants in
two different categories:
- Targeted Topic Training Category Grants
OSHA expects Targeted Topic training grantees to provide occupational safety and health training programs on topics selected by OSHA, develop training and/or educational programs, recruit workers and employers for the training, and conduct and evaluate the training. Grantees are also expected to follow-up with people who have been trained by their programs to find out what, if any, changes were made to reduce hazards in their workplaces as a result of the training.
- Training Materials Development Category Grants
OSHA expects Training Materials Development grantees to develop, evaluate and validate training materials on occupational safety and health topics selected by OSHA. The training materials must be classroom quality and ready for immediate use in the classroom or worksite or for self-study. Training materials are to be developed in portable formats suitable for both hard-copy and Internet publication and distribution. OSHA requires grantees to post the training materials on their organization's Web site for two years after receiving OSHA approval of their final products, and provide access to users at no cost. Organizations are also required to collect and report to OSHA on training materials product usage during the two years the materials are posted on their Web sites.
There is a
factsheet that provides more information about the grant
program.
